Making Bengal history: Basketball and Wrestling. Meet the Coaches
March 9, 2023
This month, winter sports wrapped up some very impressive seasons, and spring sports have finally kicked off. Beckham Basketball had a much improved run in playoffs at the start of the month, and the Wrestling Team made history. Not to mention, Bengal Soccer is just getting started, and lacrosse is gearing up to defend their state title. All that and more in this month’s sports recap!
For basketball, the month of February was intense. The boys and girls both made it to playoffs following their impressive runs in the regular season, including the boys finishing second overall. Unfortunately, both teams lost in the postseason, girls in the first round and boys in the third. The boys made history by earning 18 wins this season, the most in program history. Head coach Glover led the team to the elite eight, another record for the program.
Out of the gym and on the mat, Lucy Beckham wrestling is also making program history. Regarding last season, head coach Eric Hansen says, “In the past, so many guys quit that couldn’t stick to the process, who couldn’t see it through. It takes a special person to be willing to continue through all of the hoops of learning, losing, evolving.”
But this season, Coach Hansen also reflects on how things have changed and improved, “The current group is so refreshing and fun…and POSITIVE! The last two years there has been a great deal of negative elements that have dropped off and that has made all of the difference.” This has proven to work for the team, because for the first time in program history, Bengal wrestling made it to the playoffs. Not only did they make playoffs, but they also had four individuals qualify for the SC 4A State Tournament. These competitors include Bryce Adkins, Gianni Bottone, Jack Severino and Kelly Enright. Gianni Bottone finished as the State Runner-Up, and 4A Lower State Champion. Congratulations to these finalists and the wrestling team for making Lucy Beckham history!
