As many at Lucy Beckham know, our school houses the only veterinary science program in the district. Taught by Ms. Alex McCarrell in Room 139, her class is a great opportunity for any aspiring veterinarian or someone that just wants to learn more about animals. The class, according to her, is “not your typical sit and learn material class. It’s very hands-on.” It’s a great class for anyone that loves animals. “People don’t realize the plight our community has, the amount of animals in need,” said McCarrell when we asked her, and sharing photos of the animals in need of adoption is an effective way to spread the word. The vet science room also just received a litter of puppies that were rescued from a box next to Town Hall, and two 18-week-old kittens that need adopting. If you’re in the mood to pet an animal, you can go to the vet science room during lunch and pet a puppy or kitten. McCarrell put it perfectly during our interview: “It really makes your soul feel better, loving an animal and making it feel better.” If you’re in the market for an interactive, fun class with fuzzy friends, or want to pursue a career involving animals, then take veterinary science!
