Students and teachers are shining a light on an often-overlooked issue, which is the impact of fluorescent lighting in classrooms. Scientific research has shown that the color temperature and glare from these lights can cause eyestrain, headaches, and even impact student concentration. But don’t worry, some of our teachers have come up with a clever solution to combat this; fabric covers for the classroom lights.
The discussion about the fluorescent lights began last year when some students reported feeling more fatigued and less focused during the school day. “It’s like I’m constantly squinting, and it makes it kind of hard to focus,” said senior Kade Slagle.
Some teachers also noticed that the harsh lighting seemed to affect not just students’ physical well-being, but also their participation and overall mood. So, they took matters into their own hands. Several faculty members have begun covering the fluorescent tubes with light-diffusing fabric to reduce glare and create a more pleasant learning environment.
English teacher Ms. Metsack, who is one of the pioneers of this initiative, said, “The blue lighting is definitely calming, and I’ve had lots of students say that it gives off a ‘cozy vibe.’”
Research supports the idea that lighting conditions can affect school performance and mental well-being. According to a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, natural or softer artificial lighting can positively impact learning.
The fabric covers have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students. “It’s definitely more calming,” said senior William Collins. “I feel a lot more relaxed at the end of the period.”
While the fabric is just a short-term fix, students and teachers alike are just happy to have found a little relief.
