On Friday, October 20, the Bengal beat sat down with Mia Wave Nelson, a junior on Lucy Beckham High School’s varsity volleyball team. This is also an achievement that she’s very proud of, being able to play on the varsity volleyball team as a junior with her friends. One major goal that she wants to accomplish is winning the state championship. Although she wants to go to college to play volleyball she also wants to be able to become a therapist. She became interested in the sport when she was nine after attending a College of Charleston volleyball game. When asked if she ever feels like quitting, Wave-Nelson said,” Yeah, I guess when things aren’t going my way, then I just think about how this will benefit me and how it’s my favorite sport.” She believes her teammates push her the most because she wants to improve for them. At home, she is the eldest child plus a big sister who looks up to her mom. She would describe herself as an extrovert who is outgoing, athletic, and driven. She typically spends a free weekend catching up on schoolwork or hanging out with her friends. Some of her hobbies and interests outside of school are volleyball and going to the beach. Her daily routine is to wake up, get ready, come to school, then go to the training room after school, go to practice, then go home after practice. Her biggest pet peeve is when people chew with their mouths open and her favorite part of the day is going to practice. Her favorite childhood memory is Christmas morning with her family.
