English teacher and department head Ms. Lyon is very well-liked here at Lucy Beckham. She has won “Teacher of the Year” and is the supervisor of two clubs, Key Club and Book Club. She spends her free time reading, doing yoga, and hanging out with her two young daughters. Ms. Lyon explains herself to be organized, kind, and sometimes even a procrastinator. When asked about winning the “Teacher of the Year” award she explained that it was very validating to know that other people acknowledge the hard work she puts into her job. Ms. Lyon explained that she tries to remember what it was like to be a student and makes an effort to do things that she would have appreciated when she was a high school student. For example, in her classroom, she has a calendar preset for every quarter so students are never left in the dark about assignments. This makes her more relatable to the students and definitely helps create all the connections she has with them. Ms. Lyon’s biggest inspiration is Dr. Tate who taught at Beckham last year and won state teacher. Some wisdom from Ms. Lyon to her students is, “Just know that every phase in life is temporary, do the best you can while you’re there. But life changes very quickly and you’ll be onto the next phase before you know it.”
