Mental health affects everyone, everywhere, at all times. Mental health days help students recharge and rest. School can be exhausting and hurt a kid’s mental health. The average school day is packed full of information, and stressful moments. According to the University College of London, academic stress is more likely to cause anxiety or depression in adolescents. I anonymously interviewed a teacher in the Charleston County School District. She states, “Students 100% deserve a day off from time to time, many of my students would benefit from being able to take mental health days.”
A student’s absence could contribute to their stress load. Absences must be excused following many strict rules. However, sometimes students just need a day off, and that should be 100% okay. Many adolescents would benefit greatly from days to rest when the stress load piles up. However, there should be a limited number of days to take off. Days off allow students to perform better in school because they are recharged and well-rested.
