The guidance counseling throughout the Charleston County School District is something that people do not notice or give enough credit to. Whether it’s elementary, middle, or high school, all counselors deserve the same spotlight. Teachers and students truly don’t see how much work, effort, and sometimes stress is put into their jobs just to help all students out. Something big that counselors accomplish every year is in high school; they spend months doing IGP meetings to plan for the student’s future. They also spend lots of their time writing college recommendations and prepping the seniors for college. They plan mental health awareness activities to show the students about keeping their minds healthy and their mental health. Elementary school counselors also spend lots of days and hours planning out special events such as career day where the kids get to see and look at different cool jobs, and spend a lot of their days in classrooms teaching kids important lessons. A guidance counselor from Sullivan’s Island Elementary School says, “My favorite part of my job is being around and working with the students and being able to help them.” Most importantly, though, are counselors at Lucy Beckham High School deserve more attention and deserve for the students and teachers to realize all the hard work they have to do. Next time you walk by or see your counselor, thank them for everything they do.
