As the school year at Lucy Beckham comes to an end within the next month, kids are starting to think about summer. Summer in Charleston can be blistering. People going on the boat and on the beach are thinking about everything except one thing. This one thing is sunscreen. As the weather gets hotter, we need to apply it. Sunscreen can potentially save your life in the long run. As someone with white ghost skin, this is something that has been jammed into my head religiously. Scientists did research and said around 90% of skin cancer is due to high UV exposure due to a lack of sunscreen. It has also been proven that applying sunscreen before you go in the sun for long periods reduces your chance of getting melanoma by 50%. I know two people that have had this type of cancer and this is what they had to say. “A long time ago, I had to get some of my lip removed because the cancer would have spread if not. I now apply sunscreen every time I am on the boat and get yearly checks.” This person is my dad. He always said how important sunscreen is and to this day still uses it religiously. This story proves that real people get this and it is not something that you can just magically hope will not happen to you. As the sun comes out and it gets hotter, we need to think about this constantly.
