Eliza Evans, a right-side hitter for the Varsity Girls Volleyball team, is a freshman at Lucy Beckham High School. Evans was born and raised in Mount Pleasant, SC. She has been playing volleyball since the age of nine and a member of the Lucy Beckham Varsity Girls Volleyball team since eighth grade.
Evans participates in many clubs and activities outside of her sport, including Soldier Support, Athletes Mental Awareness, and Varsity Club. Evans plans to run for Student Council Freshman Spirit Chair. She tells The Bengal Beat, “I love this school and I want to be more involved. I want to be able to make all of our events a lot more fun and student-centered.” She has a lot on her plate, so she needs to find a balance between schoolwork, athletics, and extracurriculars. While she admits that it is difficult, she tries to use her time traveling, whether it is on buses or planes, to get all of her schoolwork done. Evans said that, in her mind, being a student always comes before being an athlete.
Evans asserts that preparation is very important to ensure success. A lot of athletes listen to music, but Evans thinks that gets her in the wrong headspace. Her dad has always been good at sharing inspirational and motivational musings with her, so when he can’t be there, she thinks back to things he has said to her in the past.
Evans is an ambitious student and athlete, so there must be something or someone who inspires her to strive for all that greatness. That person is her aunt, the CEO of St. Jude’s non-profit. Evans admires how she has spent her life helping children in need. As far as her future, Evans does not yet know what career she would like to enter, but there is one thing she is set on: playing volleyball at the University of Georgia. That has always been her biggest dream since her family are Bulldogs’ fans and she is so devoted to her sport. Come out and cheer on Evans at her tournament at Wando High School this Saturday, Oct. 12 at 8 a.m.
