Mitch Wells, sophomore student class president of LBHS, certainly does (walk the walk). Among his many roles within the community, Wells wrestles for Beckham and works on planning events for rising freshmen through Beckham’s Student Council, or StuCo. Wells immensely enjoys participating in StuCo and believes it has helped shape him into the person he is today. He has made many friends through the group and became involved in the community, something that he encourages all students to do. Wells swears that even if you are not the “star player” on the team or leader of the club, you should get involved because of the endless possibilities ahead.
Another part of Beckham that has very positively impacted Wells is the wrestling team. The team is important to him because it’s something that he consistently works at, even after receiving a concussion last year. Through wrestling, Wells also met one of his good friends, Gianni Bottone, someone that he says inspires him to be a better athlete.
Wells is grateful to teachers and StuCO leaders, Ms. Culp and Ms. Dyer; he feels that he would not be president or part of StuCo if it weren’t for them. Not only do they provide a safe space where he feels like he can be his real self. Wells isn’t the only one who feels the appreciation. “He cares immensely for those around him. He notices when people are upset. He is often the first one in a space and the last one to leave it. He thinks outside himself which is rare for someone his age” Dyer said.
