“The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare.” The Lucy Beckham Cross Country team is thriving this year. They meet all over Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms, and Park West to compete. They’ve already had two meets this year. The first was the Eye Opener Meet, which was held in South and North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee, and the second was the Warrior Meet on Pawleys Island and last weekend on September 24th the team had great performances at The Low Country Invite.

What is cross country? It is a sport where people run races, typically over grassy terrain. It differs from other sports in how it is scored; it isn’t kept by touchdown or goals. Rather than that, points are gained depending on the runner’s placement in the race. The goal is to get the least amount of points of the other teams, as the higher you place, the less points you get. Although it may seem like cross country is an individual sport, the teams work together in many different ways. An example is when the team will run together or “pack run” which helps the runners push each other to keep going.

The team has four seniors: Delia O’lunney, Matthew Tucker, Reid VonRosenberg, and Kelly Enright. Senior captain Reid VonRosenberg has some personal goals for this season. “First of all, I want more than anything to see the team achieve great things, have fun, and win. But as a senior I am also focused on doing my very best to hopefully get an opportunity to run at a collegiate level.” He also shared his favorite part of cross country. “What I enjoy most about xc is the competition and sense of accomplishment I get when I win a race or get a new personal record.” Another senior, Delia O’lunney, has also shared what she enjoys most about the sport. “My favorite part is feeling really great after a personal record and how the whole team supports each other.”
