North Vs. South

North+Vs.+South

Here at Lucy Beckham High School, many teachers and staff members are from many different places all over the United States. We interviewed 2 teachers to find out more about the major cultural and education differences working in Mount Pleasant and other schools. We interviewed Matt Fuentes about his experience living in the north. Matt Fuentes is a special education teacher and used to live in Long Beach, New York. He loves working at Lucy Beckham High School! When he moved here, he taught at a different school but as soon as he came to Beckham, he knew he wouldn’t want to work anywhere else. We asked about some major differences between living in the North, and Matt said, “A major difference between living in the North is that there are a lot fewer people than in the South”. Another difference can be the weather; the South has better weather and is warmer. He misses the pizza and good Italian food in New York and also, of course, his family. He thinks that the beliefs are about the same, but people like to make it seem like they are different. The reason he thinks it’s not that different is that there are a lot of people moving down here from the North, so it’s the same. Matt said, “If I had to move back, it’s okay, but if I had a choice, no, I like it here, but I do miss my family up in New York”. Next, we interviewed Journalism and English teacher Katlyn Metsack. She moved here from Connecticut and first started teaching in West Ashley. She mentioned that “when I worked in West Ashley, it was not a phenomenal experience.” She went on to say that she enjoyed Lucy Beckham much better. She talked about some differences in the layout of the towns and the differences in how things are organized. She says that in Connecticut, “The layout of the building and just where people live is so organized.” She says she misses that a lot. Then she talked about the differences in the education system, “I do feel that my public education at North is like a private education down here.” However, she did mention that Lucy Beckham is one of the best schools down here.
